What is the Egress standard in Quebec?
The Egress Standard in Quebec is designed to ensure the safety of residents of a house or apartment in the event of a fire. It therefore governs the dimensions and factors required for a window in a basement bedroom to also serve as a valid emergency exit.
Here are the mandatory factors and regulatory dimensions for a window to comply with the Egress Standard:
- The window must have a minimum opening of 15 inches on each side (width and height) and must have a total clear opening area of at least 3.77 sq ft (0.35 m2).
- The window must not be more than 1.5 m above the ground.
- The window must be able to be opened from the inside in an emergency without tools or specialized knowledge.
- In the case of a skylight or a window well, a distance of 30 inches must be maintained in front of the window to ensure sufficient clearance. The use of a shutter must not reduce this clearance.
Exception: The standard does not apply if sprinklers or a door leading to the outside are located in the room and are functional.
